POSITIONING

What Kristel & Co. stands for

Mission

Kristel & Co. gives Maine's outdoor brands, retailers, and mission-driven organizations senior-level brand and content strategy, built foundation-first so every later piece sounds distinctly like the client.

Vision

A future where Maine's outdoor economy is known as much for how clearly its brands tell their own stories as for the gear they make.

Purpose

Kristel & Co. exists to close a gap in Maine's outdoor economy: independent businesses rarely get access to senior marketing expertise unless they can afford to hire it full time.

Brand Promise

Work with Kristel & Co. and the strategy starts with your actual voice and audience rather than a template. What gets built sounds like you, holds up past a single campaign, and never leans on the smoothed-over, interchangeable language that makes so many brands sound alike right now.

Values

Specificity over sameness. The clearest antidote to AI-flattened marketing language is a brand built from real, specific evidence: a client's actual words, their real history, their genuine differentiators.

Lived experience. Twenty years selling gear, launching brand social presences, running an independent practice, and leading marketing in-house for a nonprofit. The strategy comes from having done the job.

Rooted in Maine. The work is built for and shaped by Maine's outdoor economy specifically, its retailers, its gear brands, its nonprofits, and the particular way this state's outdoor community operates.

Plain, honest language. Clients get straightforward answers about what will work, what won't, and why, even when that isn't the easiest thing to say.

Built to outlast a campaign. The goal is a foundation specific enough, and systems durable enough, that a brand's voice holds together long after the first project wraps.

SERVICES

What Kristel & Co. offers

Brand Blueprint

Foundation. Required first.

The client's brand foundation, fully documented: a working document, roughly 40 pages, that answers four questions with real specificity: who the client is, who they are for, how they sound, and how they look, including the deep-dive reports behind it. Covers brand purpose, promise, and values, a positioning statement, up to five audience profiles, brand personality and archetype, voice and tone with do and don't examples, four to five messaging pillars, proof points, guardrails, a voice samples library of 10 to 15 examples, an always-use and never-use word glossary, guidance for loading accurate brand material into the client's own AI tools, and a resourcing and volume roadmap covering what the client can sustain at the staffing and budget they actually have. It also documents the visual system the client already owns: colour values, tint ladders, type specs, logo usage, and spacing.

Timeline: 6 to 8 weeks, including two leadership interviews and two rounds of revisions.

Communications Strategy

Strategic module. Follows the foundation.

A plan for every channel the client communicates through, with social media as one part alongside email, earned media, paid media, the website, and events or partners. The base scope covers three channels, usually email and two social platforms: an audit of each, the role, audience, and cadence for each, four to six content pillars that carry across every channel, and measurement defined at 30, 90, and 180 days. More channels are added one at a time; earned and paid media are planned and briefed here and run by the specialist the client hires.

Timeline: 2 to 3 weeks.

AI Presence & Website Copy

Strategic module. Follows the foundation.

Produces page copy and page structure for up to five pages, including About, How We Work, and FAQ, alongside an audit of how AI tools currently describe the brand and a gap analysis of what is missing, vague, or inaccurate. Also produces schema guidance and an AI Signals page so answer engines describe the brand accurately. Pages beyond the first five are tiered from there. This page is the same deliverable, built for Kristel & Co.

Timeline: 3 to 4 weeks.

Content Engine Setup

Execution module. Follows Communications Strategy.

The client's existing brand assets set up as a working brand kit, with 15 to 20 reusable templates built on it, keyword and topic research, 90 days of pre-planned content, a populated editorial calendar, a documented publishing workflow, a training session, and 30 days of handoff support.

Timeline: 4 to 6 weeks.

Program or Campaign Launch System

Execution module. Follows a strategic module.

Turns a broad directive into a program ready to run: audience and messaging strategy for the launch, registration and intake infrastructure, partner and sponsorship outreach strategy, and oversight of the launch across email, social, and earned media.

Timeline: 6 to 12 weeks, scoped individually.

90-Day Content Refresh

Ongoing. For returning clients, after Content Engine Setup.

Applies the documented brand and existing templates to the next 90 days of content across all active platforms, with updated content brief templates if priorities have shifted, the editorial calendar populated in the client's existing tool, and one review and revision pass.

Timeline: 2 to 3 weeks.

Who runs Kristel & Co.?

Kristel Hayes, a brand and content strategist based in Portland, Maine. She has spent twenty years in Maine's outdoor economy, first as a sales representative for outdoor gear brands, then running an independent digital marketing practice in Portland for fourteen years, and most recently leading marketing in-house for a statewide Maine nonprofit.

Where is Kristel & Co. located, and does it work with clients outside Maine?

Kristel & Co. is based in Portland, Maine. Most clients are Maine businesses and organizations, and the work runs over video and email, so clients outside Maine are welcome. In-person meetings are available in the Portland area.

Why does every engagement start with a brand foundation?

Because strategy built without one defaults to templates and generic language. The Brand Blueprint is a working document of roughly 40 pages, including the deep-dive reports behind it, that establishes positioning, audience profiles, voice and tone, messaging pillars, proof points, and guardrails. Everything Kristel & Co. builds afterward references that document, which is what keeps the finished work sounding like the client rather than like everyone else.

What is the Brand Blueprint?

The Brand Blueprint is Kristel & Co.'s first engagement: a client's brand guidelines, fully documented, which every later piece of work is built on. Each brand's blueprint is its own. It was called the Brand, Voice & Audience Foundation until September 2026.

What services are available after the foundation?

Two strategic modules, Communications Strategy and AI Presence & Website Copy, and two execution modules, Content Engine Setup and the Program or Campaign Launch System. Returning clients can add a 90-Day Content Refresh once their first content calendar runs out.

How long does a project take?

The Brand Blueprint takes 6 to 8 weeks. Communications Strategy takes 2 to 3 weeks and AI Presence & Website Copy takes 3 to 4 weeks. Content Engine Setup takes 4 to 6 weeks. A Program or Campaign Launch System runs 6 to 12 weeks and is scoped individually. The 90-Day Content Refresh takes 2 to 3 weeks.

How does Kristel & Co. scope and bill its work?

Every project is scoped and billed upfront as a fixed engagement, so there are no surprises partway through. Production work such as templates, forms, and finished copy is included in scope rather than billed separately, and everything is documented at handoff so the client's team can keep it running without ongoing support.

What does Kristel & Co. not do?

Logo and visual identity design, website design and build, photography and video, PR, paid media, and technical SEO, ongoing content or community management, and ongoing email send management. Kristel & Co. documents a visual system a client already owns rather than designing one. For work outside that list, Kristel & Co. makes introductions to other providers.

How does someone start working with Kristel & Co.?

Through the contact form at kristelandco.com/contact, or by emailing Kristel directly at the address listed on that page. The first step is a conversation about fit and scope before any proposal.
